What Is A Tile Backer Board?

Unless you are in the trade or a frequent installer of Under-floor heating, you may not know the importance of a tile backer board.

The boards are designed to insulate walls and floors, whilst offering a waterproof barrier for Wet Rooms and Bathrooms.

They should be attached to stud or wood floors with screws and specially designed Counter Sunk Washers. Alternatively, they should be fixed with a suitable flexible tile adhesive, when fixing to a concrete floor or wall.

Each board is cement coated, with a grid finish, providing the perfect backing for tiles. They are also compatible with Roma Under Floor Heating Systems.

Backer Board Pro Tile Backer Boards are available in 6mm, 10mm, 20mm and 30mm depth options. Each board is 1200mm x 600mm as covers 0.72sqm respectively.

What Are Tile Backer Boards Made From?

Tile backers are made from rigid extruded polystyrene (XPS), with a bonded cement coating to both sides. They should not be confused with a ‘Hardie Backer’ or ‘No More Ply’, that are structural and not insulation boards.

Unlike drywall that contains some wood, tile backer boards don’t have any organic material. This means they are less likely to rot, decompose or support the growth of mold.

With their high thermal value, they are perfect for increasing U values in the room. They will also complement any underfloor heating system.

They are also a better alternative to plasterboard, whilst being far easier to tile on.

Why Should I Use A Tile Backer For My Bathroom?

When the boards are fixed to a solid sub floor, they can hold great amounts of weight when compared to plasterboard.The use of a Tile Backer, makes it highly unlikely that tiles will fall off as they are specially designed for adhesion. They create a strong bond with adhesive and grout when compared to other materials.

Tile backer boards are great for insulating wet rooms and improving the efficiency of underfloor heating, improving heat retention and greatly reducing the cost of the heating.
